George Orwell, the English novelist and creator of the famous novels Animal Castle, Animal Farm, and 1984, considers himself a political writer. He believes that whenever he decides to write non-political, it has become “nonsense”
But the famous psychoanalyst Eric Fromm (who also had a socio-political view of mental health) believed that George Orwell’s 1984 book, while depicting an artistic and profound depiction of a totalitarian government, was a purely political one. The look is not perfect.
George Orwell delicately portrayed a society in which the war headquarters was called the “Ministry of Peace”, the centre of information censorship and public deception was called the “Ministry of Truth”, and the dreaded centre of torture and interrogation of dissidents, the “Ministry of Love” was called.
When Winston (the protagonist) is tortured in the Ministry of Love, his “consciousness” surrenders to the system, but no torture can conquer his “unconscious”: he still has “forbidden dreams” at night and the “system” knows that dreams , Are the seed of reality and he tries to break his dreams.
This is how “Winston” is taken to Room 101, where all the prisoners tremble when they hear his name. In Room 101, Winston encounters “hungry carnivorous rats” and collapses into “integrity.”
Why is dealing with “mice” so scary ?! What does “George Orwell” mean by placing “mice” in Room 101 ?!
This is where Orwell subtly uses Freud’s monograph entitled The Rat Man. Freud has an obsessive-compulsive disorder. He has disturbing images in his mind in which the dictatorial commander of the unit in which he serves uses “hungry carnivorous rats” to punish him.
By “linguistic” analysis in the subconscious depths of this obsessive young man, Freud discovers the linguistic associations between “mice” and “shameful family traditions.”
In his book Freud as a Philosopher, Richard Bobby elaborates on Freud’s analysis and how the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan was perceived.
By borrowing “mice” from Freud, George Orwell wants to say that the basis of dictatorship begins with the family, and that dictatorship is a form of “suffering aristocracy” that has “linguistic-religious foundations.” As long as the language is flattering and flattering, the poems of praise and the rituals of sanctification and idol carving remain, this is the situation.
