Q&A: Definition of a healthy society
* Question from a reporter of “Six and Seven” weekly, a special issue of Hamshahri newspaper:
In short, what are the characteristics of a society to say that society is healthy?
Answer: The first characteristic is that the people of that society have a definition of collective interests. Of course, these collective interests sometimes conflict with the family or individual interests of individuals in that community, yet in a healthy society, individuals prefer collective interests to their own individual interests. The second characteristic of a healthy society is that people are able to work in a team and with each other. For example, in our society, how many books can you name that are the product of the joint work of several authors? This happens almost rarely.
“Practical respect for the law” is another characteristic of a healthy society; Provided that the law is also the product of “collective wisdom” and “free exchange of ideas” and that people know that the law was not imposed on them, but that everyone had a “right to participate” in its formation. Then we can see the law as the product of the collective interest, and if respect for the law harms our individual interests in the short term, we can be sure that it is in the interest of each of us in the long run. For example, if we procrastinate behind a red light, we will eventually be less likely to crash. Of course, the people of a healthy society do not consider the law as a “heavenly revelation” and are actively involved in “reviewing the law.” Many of our social’s problems are the product of wrong laws, laws that once applied and now cost far more than they benefit! Instead of breaking the law under the pretext that they are wrong, we should take an active part in reforming them collectively. One of the functions of “NGOs” is to participate in law reform.
