When we talk about denial in psychology, we mean the process that most of humans suffer from, and it means that we try to lie to ourselves! Most people often lie to themselves, why ?! Because sometimes the truth is painful, we can not stand it, so we prefer to bury our heads in the snow like a partridge and imagine that our hunters do not see us! The phenomenon of denial, of course, sometimes helps us. For example, many people would not be able to survive if they were to always remember the inevitable reality of “death” and would suffer from constant anxiety. But often the phenomenon of denial is very dangerous.
For example, a person refuses to be tested for fear of having a dangerous disease and convinces himself that I am very healthy and doctors are used to scaring people! Denial causes such a disease to miss the golden time of treatment. What cases of denial do you know?
Denial as a collective calamity
Sometimes denial is not an individual phenomenon, but a group in a subconscious agreement suffers a collective denial! For example, the people of a city deny the lethality of air pollution and continue their lives as if the numbers of statistics are related to the danger are unrelated to their lives! Or the people of a country ignore the dangers of constant exposure to satellite interference, as if these effects and dangers are just stupid stories! When denial occurs as a group phenomenon, it creates more complications and costs.
Introducing a good book
Fortunately, a comprehensive and useful book on denial has recently been published in Persian. This book is called “Willful Blindness” and was written by “Margaret Heffernan“. She has carefully studied the phenomenon of denial and has shown the role of this phenomenon in the great troubles of contemporary history. Ms. Heffernan first demonstrates the extent of the denial phenomenon in our personal lives and then proves its role in events such as the Chernobyl disaster, the Wall Street crisis, and the catastrophes of prisons such as Abu Ghraib. I highly recommend reading this book. This book has been translated into Persian by “Dr. Aqdas Safari” and published by “Sarvar Kian” Publications.
