In POW camps and some political prisons, in addition to physical torture, psychological torture is used to break prisoners.
One of the tricks of psychological torture or white torture is to make prisoners pessimistic about other prisoners, including their inmates. When prisoners are pessimistic and hostile to each other, the chances of revolt and escape are much lower.
Primo Levi was an “Italian chemist” who was captured by the Nazis during World War II and spent a year in the dreaded Auschwitz concentration camp.
After the war, Levy wrote a book entitled “If This Is a Man” and shared his memories of his captivity with others.
Primo Levy attributed most of his salvation and survival in those difficult circumstances to this factor, who was considerate and sympathetic to his fellow human beings, and regarded him as a human being, not an object and a tool.
It is difficult for many people to stand up this view in dangerous, difficult and critical situations.
At a party or when all the amenities are available, they are all kind to each other and welcome each other, but when we are in a stressful situation, our salvation becomes such a priority that we do not hesitate to violate the rights of others. It increases our chances of survival and empowers us to overcome crises.
Jailers prefer prisoners to be hostile to each other rather than to them. Jailers’s trick is for prisoners to think of “individual salvation,” while both the physical and mental health of individual prisoners and their rescue from captivity are due to their solidarity, empathy, and empathy.
